Mac and the drama club

This weekend Mac was in the school play, a parody of Arsenic and Old Lace called Larceny and Old Lace. He was a policeman, the cop with the most lines.

He did a great job, of course.

Having formerly been a director of high school shows, I have a tendency to be waaaaaay to critical. But what I love about Mac is that I can hear him. He was loud and projects. This cast was suffering from the typical pitfall of high school plays: a poor sound system. But Mac didn't need a mic- I was 5 rows from the back and could hear every word he delivered. (And I kept all my criticisms to myself about the sets, costumes, props and sound...I know, I sound like a great big wad of Bitch)

Mac also makes me laugh because he knows the Cary Grant film Arsenic and Old Lace and he loves it- he was pissed off that his director didn't just do the original show. He also thought he would be good in the lead in either show- and he would. I appreciate that everyone wants to be the lead, and I think it hurt his pride a little bit since he was the lead in a musical last year and was just resigned to be a cop in this show. Before he moved he was cast as Sweeney Todd, Demon Barber of Seville in the musical of the same name, but he moved before he could be in that show- so I think he was crushed to me just a policeman.

He knew I just directed Arsenic at my old school and he was bummed that his school did a more "school safe" and "politically correct" version of the old screwball comedy. I, being a good mom, told him he did a great job, the show was fun and it's the spirit that matters- but really- I agreed with him. He should've had a big part; he is a natural on the stage and I hope he continues to purse bigger parts.

Hoping a star is born,

Full of piss and vinegar

I have decided to hate the world today because my grandmother is an evil and manipulative shrew. And because Sam is 6000 miles away and has to work for Attila the Hun, with no end in sight, so fuck all when I'll see him again... and because I can't find a job and I'm broke.

What I'd rather be doing

I'd love to be waking up in the late morning or early afternoon, rare sunshine streaming in the room, peaking in around the closed curtains, find its niche to wake me up. I would turn to Sam, and snuggle against his still sleeping form, quietly talking when he wakes up and then making love. Afterward we would lay entwined together, and we would talk and whisper and laugh like only lovers can, pillow talk that only make sense to those laying there together.

I would try to leave our bed but he would spoon me, and hold me and say to stay and sleep a little longer... even though it was already 1 o'clock in the afternoon. We were such lazybones because we drifted into sleep at 4 o'clock that same morning, after talking and laughing and kissing and not wanting to give in to our bodies demands that we must sleep, not wanting to stop sharing what precious time we had left together, not ready to give in to the sleepy monster, even though we would be sleeping side by side.

Finally I would wriggle out of his grasp, claiming I would have to "pee", and he would let me go, but I would cheat and use my escape to shower and dress and be ready to go out, for Mother Nature was giving Dublin a much needed gift of sunshine, no clouds, just light and warmth. I would sneak back to bed and nuzzle Sam's neck, cajoling him to wake up and go out with me, but he wanted.... no needed, more sleep.

So I would leave him a hastily scribbled note taped to the bathroom vanity where I knew he would find it and I would hit the city. My intention would be to go to "Fresh", the market near the flat, but the sunshine would draw me further into the city. I would desire to be outside, to be part of the alive bustle of the city. I would shed my coat and walk along the now familiar route, the now familiar cobblestone way, enjoying the sounds of the city which had been awake far longer than I. I would cut over to amble along next to the Liffey, loving the irony of the still waters parallel to the flowing and frantic traffic. Finally, I would arrive at Bewley's, a coffeehouse and cafe Sam had introduced me to, and then I would get a mocha and a pastry and sit outside at one of the small sidewalk tables. I would watch the people and giggle at the tourists, even though, I guess, I would technically be such. I would read a book I had tucked into my bag, or the newspaper someone left on the table, and drink my coffee, and smoke Sam's cigarettes, enjoying the thrill of the moving city that I can be part of, of the outdoors that comes with being in a city, of the quaint appeal of it, feeling so metropolitan and European in my monochrome attire.

My mobile would jingle and it would be Sam, asking where I was. He said he would join me, for this is a wondrous place that he showed me and became one of my favourite Dublin haunts- he's a fan too. He would arrive in an hours time, and bend to kiss my offered lips, tasting of minty toothpaste and tobacco. I would wave him into the empty seat opposite me, and I'd push my way through the crowd to get him a double shot espresso, and a pastry, that I knew if I asked nicely, he would share with me. We would sit companionably, mostly quiet, together in the sidewalk cafe, sharing random comments about passersby, smoking, and just enjoying being together- me letting him still wake up and let his body come into tune with the city's movement, and to tune in to mine, waiting patiently until we were humming along at the same pace.

We would take our leave and meander about, winding our way to St. Stephens Green, strolling through the park, hand in hand, chatting and laughing. The sunshine would still be a gift to us and we would sit on the grass, his head curled in my lap and we would soak up the sun. We would watch the people. We would watch a group of teens play a casual and silly game of football, the catcalls and jeers to each good naturedly ringing out. As the shadows of dusk would start to fall, we would decide to walk more, talk more, stopping in the middle of the sidewalk to kiss, and wouldn't seem to stop.

As the cool darkness of the evening would settle around us, I would pull on my coat and Sam would take stock of where we have walked and then we would head to the Library Pub for pints. We would sit in the cozy chairs and watch the street below, sipping our ale and sharing contentment. We would leave and find dinner on the way back to the flat, kabobs or sushi at some place Sam knows, and then maybe go to the Celt, a pub he enjoys, for more pints, for more conversation, for more kisses, for more laughs, for more 'together'.

And then in the darkness of the city, we would leave, take a cab, holding hands and between whispers, kiss in the shadows of the bask seat like teenagers, would go back to his flat and just be together, again fighting the sleep we know we must partake in, just to enjoy a few more minutes, a few more seconds, together.

That's what I'd rather be doing today...

Obviously Missin' Sam,
Maggie

Is Sam still employed? And the West Wing date follow up

Yes, Sam is still employed. I will spare you all the down and dirty details and all the names he called his boss- which are most certainly NOT fit to print. But be that as it all may, he still has a job and in the middle of this global depression, it's a blessing. The Boss was in his office from San Fran to Dublin on Thursday and was saccharin sweet- I can at least tell you that. His job had been restructured- more training, more sales, more travel and less management duties- Sam is not a happy camper about the last one... When I talked to him after our West Wing date, his final words about the job were: "If I call you around noon your time, then you can rest assured I punched his lights out and ordered you plane ticket- you'll be leaving Sunday." The phone call, the punch nor the ticket occurred. So, he's employed for now.

The down side of this restructuring mess is that I am now no longer going to meet him in San Fran in April. Before this, he was to be in CA for 14 days and I was going to be there for a big chunk of those. The trip is now down to 4 days, with him flying out on a red eye on Thursday so he can conduct a training in Dublin on Friday... I don't think I need to even talk about how unhappy both of us are over this whole thing. he's pissed at the company. He's also pissed at himself. I'm sad over it all, vow to not use any guilt on the man because he does it well enough on his own (He has a Jewish mother- he lived the World Series of Guilt for years!), and am mad at the company. I would say the upside is that if his training schedule works out, I'll go see him at the beginning of May and be there for his birthday! Now that would be nice...

And as for our West Wing date, it was fun. We giggled and talked through much of it and he can quote the whole thing word for word, which struck me as hilarious, for some reason. When he worked for Clinton, he told me he was really like Toby but wanted to be more like Josh with a splash of Sam<-- the character played by Rob Lowe, not MY AIISam. But he was really Toby. (Okay he really wanted to be Leo- who wouldn't want to be Leo?!?) And as I watched that episode I can totally see it. Completely- he is sooooo Toby. Ah, the things TV help you learn about those you love. BUT anyway, we talked and watched and decided to do it again. We even have another "date" episode picked out. (And we were totally impressed that we only had a 2 second lag from when we separately clicked play) And for those of you who are not familiar with the shoe, shame on you, and sorry you just wasted a bit of your life reading this paragraph that probably made no sense...

Ah, the world of Sam. At least updating you on him and how his job affects me keeps me from really talking about myself........

I'm a CJ girl myself (or is that Dr Bartlet?),

What's red and black and striped all over?

Children do things to drive us parents crazy- on purpose.

Mac has been a rather congenial child overall, but since the middle of age 15, he has decided it's quite fun to play "Let me think of ways to irritate my mother." There are various rules to this game, I am slowly figuring out.

Sometimes he plays the Devil's advocate in an argument just to watch my head explode, especially if it has to do with politics or being politically correct. Sometimes he'll say or do something so outrageous, just too see what I'll do. And of course I try and "communicate" or just lose my mind or lecture him before I realized what the little shit is doing.

Overall, he's a smart kid and he just likes to jerk people's chains a bit to see what sort of reaction he can elicit. He also does this with teachers, the sperm donor and other kids. Sometimes there is a negative fallout and he'll admit he went too far- very Ferris Bueller of him- and sometimes it all comes out in the wash.

Which brings me to the point of this post. While Mac is a usually a smart kid, he wanted to prove a point to the other kids at school that being Emo does not make you an individual, it makes you just another follower. He dyed his hair black, which is an Emo trait, but then didn't do or say anything that was remotely Emo. He explained all this to me in his long drawn out teenage boy way filled with sarcasm, smarminess and other teenageisms. All I know is that I think his hair looked ridiculous when he dyed it black because he has this gorgeous natural colour of a honey/ strawberry blond combo. The first round of black shit went into his hair a few months ago and I have been agonized over it ever since then, but I learned to JUST LET IT GO!

Then he started talking about wanting red hair and it was another sort of fad. And something about the "red headed step child" slang statement since he hates his Stepmonster (aka his Stepmother) and she calls him... And his natural color was starting show show in his roots for about 4 inches- and the black is way to dark to dye over without paying $100 at the salon to strip it out. But he was talking on and on and on and on about dying his hair red, I made the same argument and then ignored him and just let him ramble and my thoughts drift. I think I missed something vital when I tuned him out. Because the next time I saw him he looked like this:

The mother of a red and black- zebra headed child,

Stray bullet?

I come from Ireland to find that the passenger side window of my car has been-- shot out. We don't live in a large city. We don't have gangs. We don't usually have people being shot in the streets, convenience store armed robberies, or other "gun" related crimes or violence around here. So it seems to be a bit discerning to have a bullet hole in my car!

Thankfully no one was hurt and it was just a window that was shot out. Thankfully I have auto insurance which covered all the the replacement costs minus $100. Thankfully my dad paid the deductible.

The car was innocently parked in the driveway, next to an alley. Daddy-O and I wonder if some kids were walking past and were screwing around and BAM out went the window. I don't think they wanted to steal anything because nothing was missing from the car, AND they didn't break out the window. It was shattered into a million pieces, but that was it. I would've thought it they wanted to steal something, they would've shot out the window, broke it in and the jacked the car or the stuff in it.

Daddy-O is a teacher and I've been subbing- we speculated that it could be on purpose... but really, I think some kids had a gun and were just playing around. And how scary is that?

Another reason for me to believe in gun control.

Ducking and covering,
Maggie

Hecate Rocks!

I want to say a HUGE big thank you to Hecate for fixing my blog. I had all those weird photobucket error messages and she brought it back to where it needed to be- to the cute little pink shoe blog that is my world!

She is a wizard, a genius, brilliant, and WONDERFUL! Thank you Hecate!!!!!!!!!!

What's doin' with Sam

Things with Sam are still good. We had an awkward adjustment period for several days when I got back. We are the King and Queen of bad timing. He got deathly ill in Milan and stayed sick when I left- high fever, stuffy nose, cough, congestion, aches, pains... and he has asthma so a small head cold turns into a major ordeal.

He also learned on St. Pat's Day that his job might be downsized into- no job. So the day before I leave we're dealing with me leaving and the emotional roller coaster that is taking us on, him ill and him in danger of no job, and his grandfather here in the States who practically raised him was hospitalized. Again, can we say Bad Timing?

And really, when we got back from Milan, neither he nor I thought I would actually be leaving until tomorrow- yes March 26- we had just planned to move my ticket to then. We had decided I should stay longer and when we got back to his flat he was going to go online and change my ticket. Except when he went to do it, the ticket prices had sky rocketed since he ordered mine. We would've had to pay the difference in ticket prices and a fee, making the price $300, While I have no job and that he was just informed that he could be loosing his job, we decided that I should probably go home. He also did some research and found that for under $300 in 5 weeks I can come back... damn the pricing around St. Patrick's Day!

The first 5 days after I left were terrible. He was sick and all he wanted to do was sleep when he got home. He had to go to work with all the pressure on maybe not having a job so he was exhausted and ill, and most certainly not in the mood for our late night chats. He was stressed and edgy. I think we talked a grand total of 20 minutes in the 5 days I got back. So of course, being a woman with PMS, having just left the man she loved, the jet lag and the stress of LIFE, I assumed he was blowing me off and the last 2 months had been a lie.

The long and the short of it was that we finally had a "come to Jesus" meeting and cleared the air. He explained all the work stuff- and had the bad news that San Fran is up in the air- he was afraid I would throw a fit (baggage from his ex wife makes him think I'll going to throw a hissy fit rather than understand he may not even have a job that takes him to San Fran, let alone me being there with him...story for later!). His asthma was acting up and he was still sick. And he missed me. He was mad at himself for not paying the ticket price to come back. He was mad at himself that he wasn't sure when we would see each other again and he wants to have a plan. He hates that I'm not there. He misses me and is frustrated because of that.

Geez, he should've told me all that in the first place!

So, all is well now. He's feeling better. His company owner is coming to Dublin tomorrow and he should have job answers. He also has a plan of when we'll meet with or without a job. His grandfather is better, fine and home. *Exhale a deep breath*

The Big Boss is coming in sometime today. Sam said he might have to take the guy out for a pint- that doesn't sound too much like getting laid off... but he said you never know in this business. the guy you drink with the night before can sack you in the morning without batting an eye. If he can just go home after work tonight without having to play host, he and I have a phone date to watch... hang on, lemme give you the background story on this...

Okay, we both love to watch the TV show The West Wing. He worked in the Clinton White House so he has a special affinity for the show. I love the show because it's just great. Aaron Sorkin is a brilliant writer and that show, for the first 5 seasons is smart and quick and just a pleasure to watch. (Funny the little things we have in common). Sam doesn't have a TV so while I was there, sometimes we would just curl up on the couch at 2 am and watch an episode or two of West Wing on DVD on his laptop. It was sweet. Now, there's an episode in Season 3 called "Dead Irish Writers" which is one of Sam's favorite episodes. I have missed that one- and come on, the irony of Irish writers, I love Irish writers, he lives in Ireland...so...

Tonight Sam and I have a date to watch "Dead Irish Writers" on DVD- me on my lap top here in Civilization and him in Dublin on his laptop. (Sam owns the series on DVD and Guard and Booknut owns it here, so I borrowed their copy). We can both watch and talk. Yeah, I won't be curled up in his arms with my head on his chest, but we can still watch together. It's funny the concessions you figure out when you have a long distance relationship.

Hurdle jumping,
Maggie

I suck. I owe.

I suck. I know. I suck. I'm having adjustment issues since I've been back thus making me really suck...

I owe you, my wonderful readers, so much. I owe you
  • a fixed blog
  • an actual real post about something, like my trip to Ireland, my love affair with a novella, my love affair with Sam, my job hunting fears, the bullet hole in my car, the stress of a long distance romance, finding oneself- which is a fucking horrible phrase, Mac's zebra hair, hanging with Lilith,
  • reading your blogs! I've missed you and can't wait to have time to catch up
  • getting back to writing, of clearing my head and purging my soul here
So thank you for being patient with me and starting tomorrow I am going to buckle down and generate some good stuff here. I'm going to fix the blasted missing image from photobucket, hopefully with the help of Hecate my other techie guru and Goddess of all things Blogtemplate. I'm going to write one good solid post. About something.

making promises and hoping to keep them,

Emotionally and physically tired don't even begin to cover it

I'm home. I'm tired. I need to do laundry. I want to be back in Dublin. I miss Sam. I'll do a wrap up the trip post soon... maybe tomorrow! (and then I can tell you about the bullet hole in my car...)

I am going to continue to post pictures on Across the Pond- I have enough to do it for several more days, of Italy and some more of Ireland, if anyone wants to keep looking!

Technical difficulties

I know, I know... there are issues with my blog. I contacted the designer and haven't heard anything- I just emailed her today, though. I don't know enough about HTML code to fix it and I don't want to ditch the whole thing. I'm hoping to hear from the creator and see if she/ he can fix it or if I need to actually hire someone.

If anyone who reads is a blog creating expert and wanted to take a stab, I would be more than happy to accept the help!

Technologically impaired,
Maggie

Can we say Jet Lag?

Keep watching here and over at Across the Pond. Updates coming here soon, and I'll keep posting pictures of my trip daily until I run out-- even after I'm back!

braving the crowd....

I'm heading out to see what chaos is happening on the streets of Dublin this St. Patrick's Day. As I've gabbed with the locals I've learned that it's just a civil holiday for the people who live here- like we get the day off of work on Memorial Day, and such. And most of the partying and revelry is actually for the tourists who flood the city from all over the world. Most locals want to get the heck outta town before the craziness hits.

So that being said, I'm going to head out and take pictures of all the idiot tourists, because of course, I'm not one of those! Yeah, yeah, yeah... I know I am... But I've been here for more than a week!

I wasn't brave enough to see the parade since they were expecting 400,000 people for it. Can we say "no way in hell" was I going to get stuck in that massive drunken group in which people had been lined up for LAST night and drinking since LAST night? (And I was exhausted from the whirlwind of Italy, of which I've put up a few pictures and promise many more to come!) But I sure am ready to have a Bulmers and people watch at temple Bar. Hopefully, I can share good pictures later!

Happy St. Patrick's Day to you all, and may the luck of the Irish smile on you! It has me!

Wishing you pots of gold,
Maggie

Back to Dublin from Milan

With all this time abroad I'm struggling to find words to put to my thoughts. It's amazing and beautiful and powerful. I'm soaking up food and cultures. I'm experimenting with my lacking language skills, though without knowing any Italian I navigated my way around Milan. Sam and I are getting to know each other, living in the same flat and hotel room, which is also an adjustment. We're getting to know each other as people than just voices over the telephone. I think it's safe to say I'm overwhelmed.

And when overwhelmed... well, when in Milan, do as the Milanese do- resort to fashion.

Fashion here in Dublin and Milan is overwhelming. First, suffice it to say, while I'm a plus sized gal I usually look nice. I may not have the latest stuff in style all the time, but I usually look stylish, classy or maybe a bit bohemian. I like to be comfortable and I have great shoes. Sam told me that during the colder/ winter months women dress very monochrome. I have plenty of grays, blacks, chocolate browns and winter creams- and I think I brought them all with me. I sort of blend in Dublin minus a few things. First, I'm chubby compared to women here. I swear to the Goddess this country is full of skinny women. If there are fat Irish women, I have no idea where they bloomin' 're. So that being said, I have the colour scheme down for the city, but the fashion police could give me a ticket. All the women here wear black shoes; you can tell the tourists because they wear tennis shoes/ sneakers. I brought several pairs of black shoes, but the pair I wore the first day gave me HUGE blisters on the bottoms of my feet and I have had them the entire time. I went to Pharmacy while here and got blister pads but everything else I owned other than my Sketchers hurt.

Another Dublin fashion faux pas I made is the length of my skirts. I have several short flippy skirts, which are short my USA standards, but are long enough for nuns over here. Women here wear skirts that just barely cover their assets. I am NOT exaggerating at all. Tiny itty bitty little skirts. I had tube tops bigger than skirts these women wear. And they are not sluts. This is in the business district! Another thing that I love about the fashion here is that textured stockings and tights are all the rage. And women love their boots here, especially black knee boots with no heels. Heels aren't really popular in Dublin because of all the frickin' cobblestones. Can we say broken ankles? And most of this city walks EVERYWHERE so heels just don't make sense. Oh women do wear high heels, but rarely, or on a pub crawl which will end in a cab ride home. When you do see a women in pants, they are traditionally black (or some other very dark color) and very very dark dark blue jeans. And they are skinny jeans, tucked in the knee high boots. Tres chic.

Milan is a completely different story. Milan is the fashion capital of the WORLD! If there were fashion polizia the headquarters would be in Milan and I would be jailed. There is no way on this earth and my subbing salary could I dare complete with the classic, wealthy, fashionatta who reside in that city. "Money money money" as ABBA would say, gets you to be the best dressed- and when you walk the streets you can see the difference between quality, the real thing, verses my great, cheap, genuine imitation knock offs. Women wore much the same as they do in Dublin but there were obvious notable exceptions:
  • Skirts are longer, usually to right above the knee and they are pencil skirts.
  • Accessorizing in Milan is like breathing- bags, belts, scarves, jewels, and of course, THE SHOES.
  • Women in Milan most certainly wear colour. While black is the staple and colour de rigeur, there was always a splash of colour- blues, reds, pinks, golds.
  • Sweater dresses and leggings are coming back- you heard it here first. A long sweater, legging or texture stockings, and knee boots are the RAGE.
  • Hair, nails and make up which might look overdone anywhere else in the world, are always done in Milan. And not that casual, fresh faced, I don't look like I'm wearing make up look, but heavily done makeup and lots of big hair.
Street after street was full of designer clothing shoppes- Versace, Armanti, Valentino, Dolce & Gabbana, Prada, Chanel... I died and went to fashion heaven.

It was amazing and wondrous and almost like a real life fairy tale- but nope, it was real. I have the genuine Italian knock off Gucci Bag to prove it...

Yours in Handbags and Glad rags,
Maggie

It's Italy- no words....

I am in Milan. Oh. My. Goddess.

The Internet is waaaaaaaaaaaay to slow for me to try and upload pictures here but I'll try and do a few when I get back to Dublin on Tuesday.

I will never eat cannoli in the States again.

Been reading them forever and can't stop- they're like crack!

Okay, I have two women bloggers whom I have been reading for a long time and I love these ladies. They are completely diverse blogs from each other, but both are appealing and delightful.

Phishez is my gal-pal from down under, and her blog is Does this crown come in bubble wrap? She is raw. She is a single girl and is sexually liberated and I love her stories and misadventures. She sprinkles her posts with her pictures, she's an animal lover, and she is one hot woman who is living life! I would love to meet her!

Then there's Tense Teacher. She's a high school English teacher and she is tense- aren't all HS teachers a bit tense, really? Don't they deserve to be? She is sometimes quirky. Once in awhile neurotic. But she is funny. She is married to the greatest guy ever (Geek) and has the sweetest daughter ever. Tense Teacher lives in the south, she loves her laptop and her new phone. She loves words and is serious about her teaching and has a great outlook on life. She's not afaird to question, to ponder, to pout, to tempertantrum, to give a yell, a hoot and a hollar. Smart woman, a reader, and her words are great! (Hell once in awhile I look up a word she used when writing- now I LOVE that in a blogger!) So Tense Teacher is a grand 30something lady!

Smart woman, smart blogger

Bragger is one of my favourite bloggers ever. She is a smart lady- teaches HS and college English. She exercises. She's wicked funny and I adore her vocabulary. I know when I visit Bragger I always laugh out loud. I find myself reading parts of her post to Daddy-O and we are both cracking up.

Since I taught not so very long ago (and blogged about that life under a different pseudonym and blog title back in the day) I can related to her "teaching" stories. Her wit is smart and clever. She's a reader and i enjoy checking out her book selection. And this woman is so totally kickass that we emailed each other di-rectly and she sent me the Moonlighting episode of "taming of the shrew" so I could use it when I taught.

i love her insights on life and how she is willing to share. I like how she can take the mundane and make it interesting and funny.

Read Bragger! I had to brag about her because she is so great... Oh, geez, you knew I was going to say it as some point, so go call the pun police... After you read Bragger!

Going out for supper...

Ever since Sam and I met in Pittsburgh, he's promised to take me out for Italian food for supper. While we were in Pitt it never happened. And since I've been in Dublin we've had Chinese, Indian, seafood, pizza, and some American- still no Italian food and I was teasing him about the omission.

Sam came home and told me he would take me out for Italian food this weekend. And I could have it as many times as I wanted because he was taking me out for supper in Milan!!!!!!!!!!!!

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!! He and I are going to Italy!!!!!!!!!!!!! The country!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! For the entire weekend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We leave this afternoon and get home around midnight on Monday. Then I'm going to spend St. Patrick's Day in Dublin and fly back to the states on Wednesday.

Oh. My. Goddess. Italy. For supper. Milan. Can we say Dolce and Gabbana? Versace?

I mean, he comes home from work and says we're having Italian food for dinner- in Milan, Italy.

Okay, that being said... I really really don't think I'll be posting here or on Across the Pond for several days. I might, but I have no idea.... Italy...

Arrivederci,
Maggie

What I've been doing in Ireland

So I have huge blisters on the bottom of my feet from all the walking and not being used to it- other than that, no complaints! I was thinking of being a bum and not doing a darn thing today since I have a few more days and could run around with Sam, but I hate to lose any time. So I'm going to veg for half of the day and give my poor blistered feet and toes a little rest. I still want to see the famous jail, get my own pictures of St. Patrick's, and I feel like I should see the National Gallery since it's free... but otherwise I have done all the things a regular tourist would do- and then some!

Yesterday I toured Dublin Castle and a funny thing happened there. The tour guide just decided that I must be a good listener because by the end of the tour he was talking directly to me, ignoring everyone else, like it was a conversation rather than a guided tour. Afterward, he and I chatted and then he asked me if I wanted to get a pint, have a bit of supper and see some sights- whoot, whoot- go me! I got asked on a date in a foreign country. Of course I said no...

I also toured Christ Church yesterday, and it was beautiful. I actually toured it twice... go figure. My digital camera batteries died in the middle. I was so bummed but I finished the tour anyway, of course. At the end I asked the docent if I could re-enter if I went and bought batteries, after explaining my plight. She said of course, so I went across the way, got batteries and came back to tour it again. Thank goodness it was self guided so I could just get some of the shots I wanted!

And since Sam has been working a bit each day, I've been running around on my own so I don't have any pictures of the two of us doing anything. For whatever reason, when we go out at night, I never think to bring my camera to dinner or to the pub. But here's a picture of him after he got home from work.

I will try and do a better job of getting some of us together.

And by the way, another reason it stinks that I don't remember my camera at night? I've eaten my way through the city (and am not gaining weight but losing so the blisters don't seem as bad!) and I've had curry and real Chinese food. I also had some fancy Greek food and visited lots of pubs to partake in lots of pints- I like Bulmers, a nice cider. YUMMY! And all the restaurants garnish fancy or have lovely presentation. All of these would've been great photo ops! Where was my brain???? (Of course I'm still posting pictures as often as I can at Across the Pond) I did get one food shot:

Another great blog to visit

I always say I was born in the wrong region of the country and claim I'm really a Southern belle stuck in with all the Yankees... well lemme tell you all- Puttin' On the G.R.I.T.S. is the real thing- and she is HIL-arious. I want to be her when I grow up.

I have no idea where I stumbled on her blog, but goshdarnitall, I am sooooo glad I did. She tells it like it is, cuts straight through the bullhockey and is blunt honest. She makes me laugh out loud- and she often gives little shopping tips which you know I just love.

Vist Puttin' on the G.R.I.T.S. And isn't that just the greatest blog name ever???????

More pictures!

To much to do and so little time to write but I am keeping those pictures coming at Across the Pond!

And please keep reading- I'll actually give you something to read soon- it will rain during the day and I'll stay home and write as soon as it does; after all it is Dublin!

Ireland... I have no words

Ireland is grand and so is Sam. The jet lag kicked my ass for 2 days, I'm walking everywhere, the place does look like the pictures books, and I'm walking around in awe...

I need some alone time to compose some thoughts to paper so for now, I leave you with this and if you go to Across the Pond I have pictures. Wonderful, amazing, fabulous.... perfect.

Scratching those itchy feet,
Maggie

Satchels & Shoes- I LOVE these boots!

I love these shorty black leather boots by Mudd. Even with that heel, they are super comfortable. I plan on wearing these all over Europe! Since London and Dublin are full of cobblestone I think I can be comfy and stylish in these suckers! I've even worn them to teach in all day long, and I feel great!

And just a chunky black bag with a shoulder strap.

In shoes (and boots) we trust,
Maggie

A new favourite blogger!

While I'm in Ireland I thought I would tell you about another blogger who is amazing: Running in Stilettos. This girl is greeeeeeee-aaaaaaaaat!

She is witty and smart- and beautiful. Her writing is flavorful and intelligent. And with a title like that, how could I just not love love love her? Really!?!

She is madly in love, like a newlywed, to her marine hunny. She is outspoken and silly, sweet and sassy. You better expect a smart woman, and not just fluff from this southern girl-- I love her blog and am so delight to have found Running In Stilettos, so I suggest that you all check her out, too.

Enjoy!

Questions to Ponder while I'm gone

While I'm gone, here are some things to think about. Please discuss among yourselves... there will be a quiz when I get back!

If you have sex with a prostitute against her will, is it considered rape or shoplifting?

Can you cry under water?

How important does a person have to be before they are considered assassinated instead of just murdered?

Why do you have to "put your two cents in"... but it's only a " penny for your thoughts"? Where's that extra penny going to?

Once you're in heaven, do you get stuck wearing the clothes you were buried in for eternity?

Why does a round pizza come in a square box ?

What disease did cured ham actually have?

How is it that we put man on the moon before we figured out it would be a good idea to put wheels on luggage?

Why is it that people say they "slept like a baby " when babies wake up like every two hours?

Why are you IN a movie, but you're ON TV?

Why do people pay to go up tall buildings and then put money in binoculars to look at things on the ground?

Why do doctors leave the room while you change? They're going to see you naked anyway.

If Jimmy cracks corn and no one cares, why is there a stupid song about him?

Can a hearse carrying a corpse drive in the carpool lane ?

If the professor on Gilligan's Island can make a radio out of a coconut, why can't he fix a hole in a boat?

If Wile E. Coyote had enough money to buy all that ACME crap, why didn't he just buy dinner?

If corn oil is made from corn, and vegetable oil is made from vegetables, what is baby oil made from?

If electricity comes from electrons, does morality come from morons?

Do the Alphabet song and Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star have the same tune?

Why did you just try singing the two songs above?

Did you ever notice that when you blow in a dog's face, he gets mad at you, but when you take him for a car ride, he sticks his head out the window?

Why did Kamikaze pilots wear helmets?

Emerald Isle- here I come!

I leave for Ireland today!!!!!!!!!

My bags are packed, laundry is done, everything ready to go... except vacation blog posts. I know if I were a good blogger I would've had 10 days of stuff written and ready to post while I was gone- fat chance of that happening! I'm so sorry, so everything was ready but that! (there are a few posts that I like to think of as mini advertisements that will post off and on...)

So, today Guard is taking me to the airport- I even get bonding time with him- how cool is that?

Now I have no idea when I'll be posting again. I'm going to try and do it every few days, but just in case I don't, I'll miss you all! And just in case I can't write about it, I have a new spot to toss some pictures up as I can! Check out my travel blog: "Across the Pond". And can't wait to share my trip. I canNOT wait to see Sam, to see Ireland, to get my first passport stamp, to do... everything possible!

I'll be back as soon as I can, at the latest March 18th!

See you from across the Pond,
Maggie

Weird stuff about me

Weird random facts about moi....

1. Magazines. I love to subscribe to magazines and I usually have about 6 or 7 coming to me at one time. I keep the mags in a wicker basket in my bathroom so I can read them when I lay in the bathtub and such. I hate it when someone reads my magazines before me- my name's on them so I want to be the first one to open it and read it and enjoy the new magazine smell. And (yes my magazine "issue" [please don't call the pun police!] continues) this week's Time was a special issue devoted to how crappy the economy is, one sad story for folks after another; I merely skimmed the issue and stuck it in the trash in an effort to make the bad stuff go away. And finally, if there are people on the covers, I always tuck them face down in the basket so they can't "see" me.

2. I have all sorts of glorious shoes in colors and styles that are stunning and beautiful. And I haven't had a job in 3 years where I could wear them comfortably. Teaching high school and being on my feet most of the day is not conducive for high heel shoes.

3. Riding horses is something I adore doing but I haven't for almost a year. And I'm not sure where my horse connection here in Civilization actually is. I need to make a horse connection.

4. I hate to fly but I will do it because it's a quicker way to get anywhere...

5. When I'm at home and bored, I have a tendency to pick one channel and let it just go over and over again. I was watching USA Network and watched rerun after rerun of Law and Order and NCIS. I used to do that with TNT and watch Law and Order, Without a Trace, and Las Vegas. Even if it's an episode I've watched I'll watch it again. And I have to say that Chris Noth is one of the best looking men in the world- he is hawt... (on the old Law and Order, and on the new ones...)

Randomly yours,
Magpie

I'm sick!

I'm sick with a head cold. I hate this. I'm taking huge amounts of Sudafed and cold meds and blowing my nose like mad in an effort to be well by Thursday because flying with a cold is NOT fun. I hate this, hate this, hate this. I had to turn down subbing yesterday because I felt like I was run over by a bus! Shit shit shit!

snottily yours,
Maggie

Got the perfect gift!

Thanks to Running in Stilettos, Curley, and Daddy-O for the suggestions/ ideas for gifts for Sam- where were the rest of your brilliant, ideas, may I ask?

Daddy-O made the trek to an antique shoppe and he spotted the perfect thing- a nautical compass, heavy as a paperweight, solid brass. Quite lovely, actually. It was just sitting in a quaint little shop! It now it's all mine!!! I'm going to try and get it engraved before I go...something like... "remember your one true north" or something to that affect.

I'm also going to get, maybe, a bottle of scotch at the duty free store. I might get a nice box of chocolates... we'll see!

Overall I'm VERY happy with the compass, and the other stuff would just be icing on the cake!

Counting down until Dublin days,
Maggie
