Think Kit day 19: unlimited

Think Kit day 19: If money, time or other commitments were no obstacle in 2014, what would you do? Describe your vision!

Now who doesn't love, love, love a topic like this? This is like the "if you won the lottery, what would you do" with the money sort of question.

I have 4 very separate ideas:

1- I would move to Boston and enrolled in Boston College. I'd live in a little apartment with my dog and work on my Master's in Library Science. I'd enjoy the city and the people while concentrating on studying.

2- I'd love to buy a very large old Victorian ear house and open my own bed and breakfast. Also... there would be a full service tea room available 6 days a week, where I would sell soups and sandwiches and service high tea for ladies who lunch, tea parties, birthday parties or just anyone who wanted to come round  for a spot of tea or a cuppa. One of the small downstairs rooms would also be converted into a quaint bookshop, filled with quirky titles, classics and bestsellers.

3- I'd have my own food truck, selling nothing but wraps and salads.

4- travel all over Europe, seeing everything, meeting ALL the people. I'd stay as long or as short in places as I wanted, dallying where I couldn't get my fill... I'd eat all the food, kiss all the men, mingle with the locals, and tour with the tourists.

Oh how I wish 2014 would give me no limits!

Weird dream Tuesday

Before I tell you the dream, you need some back ground information here.

I work with a super nice couple at school, R and T. They have a 6 year old son, their only child. They live away from campus but have worked for this company in several capacities for about 20 years. I just love them both!

We have two young guys, in their mid 20s- that I like to call the Goon Squad. They work second shift and take care of all the issues on campus that happen during typical second shift hours. K is married with 3 kids and his dad-in-law is VP of our company. I guess he's a cutie but I've never thought about him like that before. The other guy, D, is a hottie and he's a flirt, even though he's married. I might have had a sinful thought or 2 about D but never acted on it!!!! D is the boss of the Goon Squad so while I have some interaction with K, it is very limited and I have more interaction with D, through all of the jobs I hold on campus. D doesn't smoke.

Back in the 80's we had a department store in our town that has long since gone out of business, but it was mostly a store that catered to women and children's clothing, and a little bit of men's clothes. That store chain finally went bankrupt so it doesn't even exist, and has been gone from our town for almost 20 years.

Now for the dream:

I'm babysitting for R and T's 3 year old daughter. (Refer to facts above- they don't even have a daughter!). In my dream their daughter is my niece. I'm at their house, (but in my dream they live in a campus house that belongs to the H's) and I'm watching their daughter. I walk by the den and R is assembling something red- I can't see what he's putting together. But he's putting together something red and he accidentally kicks over a glass of water. I see him do it but I don't offer to clean it up; I just go to the kitchen. Their daughter comes in and I give her a glass of water and she runs away with it. I go after her, armed with paper towel because I know she spilled it in the living room.

I get in the living room and she did spill it. I was cleaning it up when the doorbell rang. I answered the door and it was The Goon Squad. I invite them in and we all sit down. K gives me a present, in a red gift bag, and I open it and say thanks and hug him. Then he gives me two greeting cards and they are 1x1 inch each and I open and read them and am VERY excited. I go to thank him for the cards and when I look up from reading them,. the house is full of people. It's a huge party.

The party isn't FOR me but I'm just there and music is playing and everyone is having fun and eating and drinking out of red cups. I find K and give him a hug and thank him for the cards. As I hug him, he whispers in my ear "I know you'll love living at the lake. I love living at the lake." At that point I think it might be Valentine's Day- maybe because the color red has come up three times?

And as the party goes on I think I need to speak to D. I MUST speak to D. I go out a door (in reality, the door in the kitchen I went out of is really a window but in my dream it's a door) and when I close it behind me, I'm standing in the Department Store.

D is standing in the middle of the women's clothing with his arms full of women's clothes. And he's smoking a cigarette. I say, "You can't smoke in here! Everything is going to stink!" He says, "Don't worry about it. I have a hand held water filtration system" and he holds up a small water container with tubes and stuff. I shrug and he walks away toward the women's changing rooms.

I ask D "where are you going? You gonna try all that on?"

D says wickedly, "No I just want to lay it all out and look at it" and he walks into a dressing room and slams the door and giggling.

I woke up.

Moral of the story? Do not eat chili for dinner, before going to bed.

Hoping I sleep better tonight,
Maggie

Random Monday stuff

I'm going to read The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton this month. If anyone wants to read along and then chat about it via a blog post/ comments/ emails, that would be cool! Drop me a comment if you want to take this challenge on. (It's available on Kindle and Nook, for those of you lucky dogs with such devices!)

Daddy-O subscribed to Netflix. We can download movies to our laptops. All three of us, Mac, Dad and me, can watch a different movie all at the same time. OMG- this is gonna be cool. Dad and Mac spend hours looking at the huge list of downloadable films. I was semi-comatose on the coach during this but it seems pretty awesome. Maybe I'll feel better enough to give it a whirl!

I'm still sick. I'm still running a fever but not as high. I ache everywhere; even my hair hurts. I can't believe I'm staying home sick on the first day day from Christmas vacation. I was up and down most of the night, too. I said I wasn't ready to go back and wanted to stay an extra day but this wasn't what I had in mind. Daddy-O asked if I needed to go to the ER and I said no (I have no health insurance so I'd probably end up at the morgue before the ER. I HAVE life insurance). I had dreams about being dipped in tubs of ice cubes and Little House on the Prairie and Mac shining bright lights in my face and questioning me over and over. I had all sorts of weird dreams.

I remember in 1999 I was super ill with a really high fever. I remember when that fever broke I woke up drenched in sweat; my skin literally looked like I had been swimming, and I was all glistening. I was that slick with sweat. My hair was drenched, too. It was so gross. I was living with CanadaSam then. I remember he helped me into the shower and then he changed all the sheets on the bed and got me clean jammies. I remember I felt better but just weak. I keep thinking this fever will break like that. But I think it's just going to go down and then away; nothing real dramatic.

I want to write a post about New Year's Eve and Christmas day but I just don't have what it takes, yet. I can't believe I wrote this much.

Come sail away

They say the sea is cold, but the sea contains
the hottest blood of all, and the wildest, the most urgent.
- the opening of "Whales Weep Not" by D.H. Lawrence

I've had a man tell me I'm like the sea. Maybe I am since I've always been attracted, drawn, mesmerized, almost obsessed, by the ocean. AlaskaSam told me the "sea is cold. She is a harsh mistress with violent temperament. But she sustains and brings life to the world. All life began in the oceans and eventually all life ends there as water sweeps across the land and flows to the sea carrying pieces of us. " There's an analogy there about us, or at least a long time ago that could've been true.

He also told me I'm the type of woman that give men a reason to go to war and it's my face that launches a thousand ships. Oh hella yeah, that man could give a compliment. And what is with the water theme?

But even before all those years ago when he said I was like the sea, I was attracted to the water. I've always been drawn to the ocean or even small bodies of water. I was torn between going to an Atlantic Ocean state or going to the Wild West. I got a job offer from the Wild West first so I went. But I've still been drawn to the water, which is sort of strange for being a kid born in a land locked state who never saw the ocean until she was 18 years old.

But there's something about the water, the ocean, the way it talks back to me. I can see my soul on the water. I know that sounds silly. The ocean talks back, holds a conversation, unlike the vast openness of the Wild West land. I yearn to be near water so much so that I often drive to points north of me, about 2.5 hours, to just walk the beaches of Lake Michigan. Yes, I know that's not the ocean but it's big enough to scratch my water itch.

I am dreaming of the ocean at night. I'm drawn with a magnetism I cannot describe. To say the sea is calling me is trite and insufficient.

A warm fire and a cold sea; symmetry. A soft bed, hard spray, gentle rhythm. The silence of a million years can be found in the swells and crest of the waves; a contradiction.

I need to find my center again. I need to find my inner peace. It's out there. Something is out there. Anything. Everything.

Every breath I take seems to match the swell and fall of the ocean. I think it's time for a road trip to the water.

Another damn dream (or is it a nightmare?) with a different type of snake

Okay, here's another dream. I thought I'd just throw it out for more blog fodder. In this dream I'm living in Dublin.

I'm sitting in the bar called The Library Pub, a wonderful and quaint little pub in Dublin (it's a real bar, not just in my dream). I'm curled up in a corner, sitting on a couch, grading papers. I'm drinking a Bulmers Cider. I look good- my hair is longer again and to my shoulders. I have on textured tights (all the rage in Dublin), black knee boots, a short gray skirt, a white shirt with a black sweater vest. I look very teachery but sexy at the same time.

And then in walks AIISam... remember this is a dream, folks! And we have this conversation:

Sam- "Uhhhhh, Maggie? Maggie, is that really you? What are you doing HERE?"
Me- having a drink and marking papers. (barely looking up at him)
Sam- Is this a holiday? Wait... marking papers? (and he looks pretty confused, stunned, a bit pleased and just shocked) You're in Ireland! Why?
Me- Yes. (and I just stare at him expectantly)
Sam- why are you marking papers? What do you mean marking papers? (And he sits down, or more actually, sinks in shock, into a nearby chair)
Me- I'm a teacher and this is what we do.
Sam- you're teaching? here in Dublin?
Me- yes (and I smile coyly and down the rest of my drink)
Sam- how did that happen?
Me- Well, you remember the woman I met on the plane on the way to Milan who was a teacher? We exchanged info and she called me to say her school wanted to hire an American for a year and one thing led to another and here I am.
Sam- how long have you been in Dublin?
Me- Since mid July
Sam- (in a totally shocked, stunned and hurt voice) You've been here three and a half months and you've never called me? never contacted me? Nothing?
Me- (in a really shitty, cold voice) You are kidding, right? You made it completely clear that you wanted nothing to do with me- no emails, no calls. Hell, you didn't even let me know if you got the package I sent all those months ago like you promised. Do not even act like this affects you.

I then told him I needed to leave so I collected my stuff, said goodbye and I went into the backroom of the bar and hid in another chair. The waitress brought me another Bulmers and wouldn't take my money. Apparently Sam checked to see if I was really leaving. He walked over and said he was sorry. We had a bit of small talk about teaching and his job. He also asked if I was doing any traveling and I told him about several trips into the country and about visiting several blog friends throughout Great Britain, as well as going to Northern Ireland to see another blogger. He wanted to know how I found living in Dublin and that he couldn't believe we hadn't run into each other and he exclaimed:

Sam- I'm sorry. But you're here and if we lived in the same city, then we wouldn't have had to break up!
Me- I don't believe that.
Sam- I'm sorry. Can I buy you a drink? Would you like to get dinner? We can catch up.

And then I wake up. I'm not eating leftover Chinese food before I go to bed anymore.

These dreams go on when I close my eyes,

These snakes weren't on a plane...

I had a dream the other night. And it makes me wonder what in the world is going on in my subconscious.

In my dream, I'm asleep in my bed, in my attic room at Daddy-O's house and in my dream I feel something slither across me, on top of the covers. And not slither in a sexy way.

So in my dream, I wake up and jump out of bed. I'm standing next to the bed and there are HUGE snakes on the floor, looking like about 20 of them but probably just 2 but they are enormous and fat and just HUGE. These huge snakes are crawling and slithering around my legs. I stand motionless, listening to them slither and hiss at me and bare their fangs. I'm paralyzed with fear, with my heart pounding, face red, beads of sweat running down me, labored breathing, scared out of my mind. Then they slide under the bed and i jump on top of my bed. They sudden appear again, popping their heads over the side and I throw my white goose down duvet on top of them and I grab a garden hoe, that is for some bizarre reason (that can only happen in a dream of course) conveniently leaning against the bedroom wall, and hack them to death while they are trapped under the blanket.

When I'm done I hear Mac and his friend Ryan laughing (in Real life, in non dream life, that is- I have never even met Ryan but Mac tells me horrendous stories about the shit this kid does and it makes me, in the real awake world, cringe that Mac chills out occasionally with this kid). I guess Ryan had caught the snakes and they deiced to mess with me and set them loose. I called the police and had both boys arrested.

The cops came and took the boys and I was sitting there waiting for animal control to come and take the snake remains when the duvet started twitching.

Then I woke up. I woke from this dream at 4:51 am and have been awake since then.

Dream a little dream of a B and B

I've been thinking about running a bed and breakfast for some time now. Please note I said run a B and B, not own. Lots of people, though, buy a B&B to run themselves, not to hire out a person to do it for them. And, well, I've never run a B&B so I'm not sure anyone out of the blue would just hire me to take on such an adventure- even though I know it's something I am more than capable of doing.

But lately it's brewing and simmering around in my head. Here in my hometown a beautiful bed and breakfast is for sale. It's been fully restored. It has 5 guest rooms with private baths, along with a living area, a dining room and a private apartment. Not to mention the 2 car garage, the fenced in back yard, the patio and hot tub and other things.

This place is gorgeous. It's in my childhood neighborhood, right next door to the house I grew up in, as a matter of fact. But it's a mightily wonderful house, a warm butter yellow, with white trim, lots of windows, a nice yard... and it would be perfect for me.

I can cook, contrary to the previous posts. I can bake, and I can clean. I could stay in the private apartment as my living quarters. I could do it. I know I could. I've read and read and read all about bed and breakfasts and running. I've looked at books and online. I've spoken to people who own them. I really think it's something I could do. I have ZERO financial ability to buy it myself, but I really think it would be an ideal job for me. I could create in the kitchen and have minimal socialization with others,. I could do this and write. It would be grand, a grand arrangement for me.

And with this particular home, I have two other ideas of things I would like to add to the bed and breakfast. There's a small room with a private entrance that could be a small used bookstores, just one room. I could call it the Book Nook, just a small corner room of the lower level of the home. I could have it open each day and just keep the books contained to the one room.

Another idea I have is to do high tea. Oh, scoff if you want and blame it on me wanting to be British if you must, but really, and guffaw that high tea would never work in a small Midwest town but you would be surprised. I would have high tea Monday thru Friday. I could cater to the ladies who lunch or do birthday parties for little girls. We have lots of rich bored housewives who would make it their new "in" thing to do. Book clubs could meet and have high tea when their featured author is British, the setting is British, or just any damn time they wanted! I could offer it as part of the service for guests, of course, but it could be open to the public for high tea. I would work the backyard into lovely gardens to sit and read or enjoy the quiet.

There are no other bed and breakfasts in my town so I would be the only one- the competition would be 2 chain hotels. I have marketing ideas to promote the shit out of a bed and breakfast. This town has a beautiful performing arts center so I could cater to the performers, business men, and tourists. This town does actually get tourists and visitors because of the historical aspect.

I even have an idea for a name. Since I have a fascination with England and Ireland and the bed and breakfast in question is located on the top pf a hill, well, I would love to call it after the wild English/ Scottish flower called 'Heather on the Hill.' Perfectly reasonable, especially if you know me.

Again, I think I would be the perfect hostess, the perfect proprietress, and it would suit me. I really want, want WANT to do this! I so want to do it. But... If only I had the money... if only... if only...

Sometimes it's all about the if onlys and the dreams,
Maggie

Dream a little dream of...

I had a dream a few nights ago and it went something like this...

Mac and I were treasure hunting in Africa. We land at the airport and I rent a Convertible Land Rover and off we go into the African Bush (go ahead and laugh at the image of me in the African Bush- I too laughed- when I woke up and reflected on the absurdity of such). We travel along a dirt road forever, seeing nothing but African nature straight from a film called... Out of Africa, and as clouds roll in and darkness falls, we come upon a bar. It's a "town" on a map, but all Mac and I could see was just a run down bar. We are tired, dirty, dusty, and thirsty. We park in an area where there are other vehicles and animals "parked" which is about 100 yards from the bar.

When we walk inside, it's like a scene from Crocodile Dundee. Everything goes silent and deathly still. Everyone is staring at us. Then suddenly a guy calls out my name and runs over to embrace me, and then all the noise surges back again, people move and it's like nothing broke their strides.

Now the guy hugging me is acting like we are best long lost friends. The guy is William R. Moses, and he's asking about my family, telling Mac he's grown, just like someone I know. He goes on and on about how funny it is to run into me in the African Bush. The three of us sit down and have a few beers and bullshit, and eat.

I'm really casual about telling him why Mac and I are there and he says we shouldn't be running around the Bush without a guide or help so he decides to come along. So he grabs some supplies and he and Mac head out the the Land Rover and I said I'll meet them there after I visit the Ladies Room.

I go to the bathroom and then leave the bar. It's storming like nothing I've ever seen, lots of lightening and thunder and the rain is just pounding down in torrents. As I'm running across the parking area, I see money on the ground. And not just random bills, but lots of money sort of bound together in plastic wrap. Rolled not in typical fashion and not in bricks, but rather, rolled length-wise so it looked like a baton. And there were several of them on the ground so I was scooping them up and stuffing them down the front of my white beater (pink) shirt. Then out of nowhere, behind me, comes a pack of Pygmies wielding spears, and hockey sticks. They started chasing me. I just jumped into the back seat of the Land Rover and that's when I woke up!

And here's where it gets even more weird. (Is that possible?)

I lay there in bed and thought it was really a weird dream. I was really awake. I looked at the clock, 5:40 am, and I heard the television from down stairs. I listened a while longer and I could hear I Love Lucy and a laugh track. I like watching Lucy and I couldn't understand why dad was up this early on weekend and WHY he was watching TV, to boot. So I grab my robe, walk into the living room and... nothing. The house is dark and quiet. I listen outside dad's bedroom door and nothing. No TV is on, no one is awake but me. WEIRD!! I was awake but now I was hearing things. Strange, I know. I walked around the house, turned on the TV to just see if Lucy was on (she wasn't) and I turned on lights. I read for awhile, drank some OJ and then went back to bed and didn't dream any more.

And I swear I didn't drink a damn bit oc booze (tho I really wanted a Cosmo) before I went to bed... what the heck was that all about?

Dreaming with my eyes wide open,
Maggie
